WoW: Blizzard is considering the inclusion of Ray Tracing according to a rumor

With the BlizzCon 2019 concluded, we could think that the Blizzard novelties are finished. Still, the rumors continue to provide us with new details related to the team's main titles. The game, both in the World of Warcraft Classic version and in the "recent" version, is one of the most loved by the public and the arrival of a new expansion made many happy. The rumor seems to have started from an interview with Senior Game Producer Michael Bybee and Lead Software Engineer Patrick Magruder during BlizzCon 2019. It seems that the two have said that Blizzard is considering introducing Ray Tracing into WoW.

The upcoming expansion will offer new content to players at higher levels. Once a player reaches level 60, they will be able to join a Covenant, which ties into the expansion’s afterlife theme and grants characters with new powers from the group they join. Character customization is also getting better with the availability of different tattoos, hairstyles, and skin tones. Also, Death Knights will be available for any of the game’s races. There are 8 new dungeons, and its first raid is set up for 10 players. The highlights of the expansion are new features like Torghast, Tower of the Damned, a new randomized dungeon experience.

The two, however, have stated that it remains a main goal to reach the widest possible audience with WoW: this means that the game will continue to support very accessible system requirements, so as to allow even the least performing PCs (who do not even imagine Ray Tracing) to play the game without problems. At the same time, however, it seems that the team wants to integrate the latest technologies into the game.

It is also unknown what kind of Ray Tracing could be supported: it could be linked to shadows, environmental occlusion, global lighting or reflections, but these are speculations. Right now, it seems unlikely that Blizzard will try to offer a purely visual high-level enhancement for a title that relies heavily on older gaming machines. In any case, we'll just have to wait to find out if the team has something in store for us.
